Phyllis Galembo - Maske

Cultures influence arts and fashion but we covered most of it over the surface. Considering they are getting even more precious in our overly digitized world, now it's time to get deeper and more eccentric to discover the powerful subcultures that will become our main inspiration sources.

Omolu, Brazil, 1987

Masquerade, Burkina-Faso

Two Boys with Whips, Jacmel, Haiti, 1997

Phyllis Galembo began photographing the characters and costumes of African masquerade in Nigeria in1985 and she continued working throughout west and central Africa. Maske is an album featuring her thrilling portraits of masquerade and carnival characters, from Zambia, Nigeria, Benin, Sierra Leone, Burkina Faso, Ghana and Haiti.
